  • Julie Bain has created a web quest here based on The Viewer (Shaun Tan and Gary Crew). Not only is it a complete classroom-ready unit of work, but it also provides an excellent overview of key terms used in visual literacy, with accompanying images that explain each term clearly.

  • Interested in using picture books as related texts in your Area of Study? A second web quest by Bain (see above) can be found here. This web quest draws upon the work of Australian illustrator, Shaun Tan.
  • Interpreting Visual Texts in English is a handy list of questions to consider when analysing visual texts. It is published by the NSW English Teachers Association.
  • Color in Motion explores the symbolism of colour.
  • The Art Gallery of NSW has a 'virtual gallery' that students will find most helpful. Not only can students view works of art, but the gallery includes useful accompanying notes on the composition of each artwork.
